Does anyone else do this?
Yesterday, the wife and I had a hard day at the office. When we got home, I decided to head off to the liquor store for a bottle of bubbly to enjoy with dinner. (Veuve Cliquot, Orange label for regular occasions is favorite champagne). It was chilly last night at 7pm in Central Jersey, about 45, maybe less. (car temp gauge said 43)
I start the car, and drive to the store. It's less than a mile, so I shut the car off, and run in and buy two bottles. I come back out, and start her up again. Hmm, the temp gauge is just reading normal, the oil temp gauge hasn't budged yet. What do I do? I proceed to drive the car around until the oil temp gauge is reading normal.
Here's my problem. I just can't bring myself to treat this car poorly, no matter how lazy I am. I always, always drive gently until the oil temp is up to at least 170. I mean, I don't even bring the revs above 3000 rpm. Even on runs to the supermarket, I drive the long way, just to be sure that the car is fully up to temp before returning home. Once everything is up to normal levels, I proceed to run her through the gears, hard. Usually a full throttle run through 1st and 2nd, then up into 5th for about 1/2 mile. I even have a particular route that will allow me to do just this. I then pamper her back to the garage. I really treat this car like a person, like a companion rather than a transportation tool. Anyone else do anything as remotely pathetic as this?

My understanding is that you need to warm up enough to...
(1) Burn or evaporate any fuel or moisture that may have found its way into the crankcase; and
(2) Obviously, allow the oil to reach all of the necessary spots in the engine and be fluid enough to work.
The second concern does not give cause to keep running the car or extend your trip if it has not reached it's temp. So, my guess is that the first cause would be the best reason to get the temp up.
In the "old days" you also wanted to warm up the exhaust system to dry it out before shutdown. I suspect that stainless exhaust has eliminated this problem.

I drive about 3 miles at around 2-2.5k rpm, with one 4k burst ... then drive normally after that
Even though the temp isn't up to but the first small line, the car feels warm enough to push after that. A little different with turbos, yes, and my engine is NA.
