It must be that they are made to an old imperial size but this been converted to a metric size to keep it up to date. Why else would they choose 57.1mm and not just 57mm?
In England, we have a couple of generations who are equally conversant in both imperial and metric. I work in both depending on what it is I am doing because some tasks lend themselves better to one or the other.
It seems a shame that ultimately, the whole world will convert to metric and loose the flexibility and almost personality that the imperial system has. It was developed out of pure logic. Pure divisable units which work well across all scopes of measument. In Metric if you have 10 of something, all you can do if halve it, in imperial when you have 12, you can halve, quarter, third etc... Damn Europeans!
