Default Does water pump have smooth or ribbed pulley?
For anyone who has done timing-belt/water pump -- does the pulley on the water pump have grooves?

Its a '98 A6Q if that matters...

No, it's smooth. The back of the timing belt runs over all 3 pulleys, the crank and cams are toothed

Default Agreed, its smooth. It is driven by the backof the cam belt which is why if it fails it takes....
the cam belt with it.

Default Smooth it is! However...
If it's smooth, wouldn't it be *less* likely to break the timing belt than if it was toothed?

Maybe that is why it is smooth...

It is smooth because it runs on the back of the belt, not the toothed side!

Default Exactly. It breaks the belt because when the pulley locks up, the belt drags over it...
which wears it thin, and ultimately it breaks.
