Thanks, Sloop, the pictures were very helpful. I had been using the Bilstein US website, which clearly gives the '2709 for 2001. But this link shows the 24-065085 for MY 01.01 on--so Bilstein doesn't agree with itself! The German site also still lists the 24-065108 (B8-Sport series) which isn't sold in the US any more. That one appears to have an even shorter shaft than the '6508.
And AWE's site differs from all of this in that they list the '6508 starting in 2000. But I think that's my shock--darn; will have to exchange.
Also, the '2709, is smaller in diameter than the OE shock; the '6508 lists as the same.
Why Bilstein and their authorized dealers (AWE) can't make this clearer is beyond me--if I'd known going in I'd've bought the Konis.

To summarize Bilstein front shocks for future searchers:
24-027094 36mm dia / longest shaft (about 165mm to base of threads)
24-065085 46mm dia / medium shaft (from scaling picture, similar to stock)
Stock* 46mm dia / approx 137 mm shaft to base of threads
24-06510 46mm dia / shortest shaft from pix (don't have one to measure)
*Stock is original shocks on a 1BE sport suspension

In the B6/HD line, all seem to agree on the 24-065092 for the rear, and it installed like stock for me with no affect on ride height and a stock-like ride (maybe a bit firmer--after all the stock ones were old!)

Once I get them exchanged and installed I'll post back and confirm the fit.
