Heard Mario Andretti being interviewed on radio in SF. He touted the driving skill and manners of the typical Euorpean driver especialy on the Autobahn type roads: move over and let them pass (having a Porshe 3 feet from your rear bumper is nerve wracking). I agree with him. I found it safer to go faster there, not like here. Our cowboy driving manners could stand some revision like no passing on the right except for exits.
I'll now try and dodge the brickbats.

It's people in the left lane who won't move over.
Funny how every news story on road rage focuses on the evil fast driver coming up from the rear. The fact is, both people are just moving along. Generally, both are speeding (one may be 5 over the limit and the other trying to drive 10 over, but both are violating the law). Common courtesy, and the rules of the road, dictate that the slower driver should move over. The faster guy doesn't want a fight, he just wants to pass. The fight starts when the slower guy either isn't paying attention, doesn't care, or decides to "teach that maniac a lesson"
<end rant>

I never encountered a U.S. style situation as you describe it on a European Autobahn. I self toured western Europe and England many times. I thought driving there was easy and the other drivers aware and courteous. No road rage evident or necessary.

... occupied. It takes courtesy and common sense on both sides. The person wanting to pass should be patient until the left-laner can find a spot; and the left-laner should be looking to move over.
The signal to move over is a flash of the hi-beams, NOT a tailgating maneuver.
It gets ugly when each one somehow decides that the other is obnoxious or stupid.

I'm taking light to moderate traffic, where the lane blocker can move over to allow the pass, then move back (if necessary) without shutting off the cruise, hanging up the phone, or skipping the DVD player.

And until people LEARN to stay the hell out of the left lane, as if they are entitled to be there, I'll continue to do so.
