dual to single climate control button?

It makes sense to me for three zones but it seems excessive (but certainly nice to have) for a dual zone system.

Reading the link, however, I'm still not entirely certain what the procedure is.
(I'm also assuming the A4 climate control system being discussed in the linked thread is identical to the system in my '01 A6 2.7. I was not aware of that. Newbie owner)
**EDIT** Just looked at a few A4 pics. Their climate control system are different. Saw an '01 with just one temp control window and an '02 with dual settings, but, with 2 "auto" buttons.
So, I believe the thread you linked deals with a system that is not the same as mine.
Do you press the recirc button at the same time as the driver side "+" button while holding down the "auto" button?
or...
the link mentions holding down the "auto" button on both sides...there is only 1 "auto" button (on my A6), so is this suggesting to hold the "auto" button down while holding the "+" buttons on both sides at the same time?
Sorry if I seem clueless on this point.

1. pressed the auto and both + buttons...no change
2. pressed the auto and both - buttons...no change
3. pressed the recirc and + button (driver side) and auto button...no change but the temp readings switched from C to F and back.
4. pressed both + buttons....no change
5. pressed the + button on the passenger side, the sunroof close button and the RR passenger side window raise button...allright..just kidding.
Next suggestion...

I tried holding just the auto button and it didn't work. I tried various other combos but couldn't get them to synch.

lower down in the thread you noted that you had definitely synchronized the drive and passenger side temp controls on your wife's '98 A6.
Having now looked at many pics, I can see no difference between '98 - '04 A6 climate control systems. They all feature the same buttons and the one "auto" control in the centre (as opposed to other Audi models with 2 "auto" buttons and '05 and newer A6's).
So if you managed to synchronize the driver and passenger temp controls in your wife's car, you must have the correct method that will work for everyone with a '98 - '04 A6.
Please share.
