The dumbest of questions....

Yeah, so the interior rear view mirror pops off yesterday during our first hot day in Philly. No problem, I've reattached these things a dozen times. Pick up $4 mirror epoxy at the hardware store. But, the damn thing doesn't have the usual "button" that you glue on first...super glue doesn't hold it either.
What's the trick here? There's a small black disk on the window...do I need to scrape that off?
And yes, I SFTA...I was trying to find an excuse not to ask this question...

The mirror usually clips onto a small disk and then turns to lock into place.
So my guess is that the little disk you are talking about is still clipped to the mirror. You need to twist it to unclip it so tht you can remove it. Then, obviously, you glue that to the window, let it dry, and re-clip the mirror to it. Make sure you get it rotated the correct way when you glue it so that the mirror is correct.
Remember that when you glue it it has to be cool out.
This is coming from a B5 S4 but I doubt the C5 A6 is any different.

My guess was wrong....
My indy couldn't glue it on or remove the disk from the mirror.
A "glass repair guy" told me to get a new windshield.
My local dealership told me that the black dot on the windshield should stay and that the small disk does NOT come out of the mirror. He said to call a local Safelite office because they have the glue that works. More to come...

and the final answer is...
replace the whole damn windshield....
The mirror disk is factory mounted and cannot be remounted. I also had a small crack in the windshield so insurance covered all but $50. It's amazing how much clearer the view out the front is...

Re: My guess was wrong....
Ok, I figured it out.
The button does come off. If you look carefully around the button, the is what looks like a small screw driver indent in the black (pot metal) material holding the button.
1. You need to insert a screw driver and slightly pry up on it.
1a.Then somehow twist the button one way or the other. It doesnt matter which way you twist it.
***(after thought, the clip holding the button in has some give to it. If you gently pry up on two opposite sides with screw drivers, a good pair of pliers will work to spin the button.)
The button needs to twist about 90 degrees then will come out of the metal clip holding it in. Of course, I found out the hard way which included stabing my hand with the screw driver. But I guess that sometimes comes with the territory.
Of course, now I cant find the darn Permatex Extreme glue kit I just bought for 5 bucks at Autozone.
