Need some expert help, here goes...
I have been having the notorious MIL (CEL) on my 01 A6 2.8L (96k mi) for the left and right bank cats. Found out about the TSB for the ECM flash update. Went to the dealer and asked for the flash. They did the (unnecessary) diagnostics and told me there was no TSB ECM update for my car and charged me the $150 anyway. I started doing some of my own research and found the exact TSB # and contacted the dealer again. They told me that the ECM flash is only for 2.8 A6's with VIN's ending under 006888... my VIN is 104111. Dealer told me the ECM flash could damage my ECM and lock the whole car up. WHAT??

PLEASE... HELP!! Is there any validity to this? Is there ANY chance that the ECM update for the earlier VIN's could damage my ECM? I have the TSB in hand, how do I know the VIN cutoff is true?

I can't believe my cats are bad, as I see no performance issues. If the problem is not the ECM sensitivity it is a HUGE coincidence!

Asked my shop about it and he said maybe there was a TSB and fed's stepped in and pulled it because it wasn't the emission #'s the gov. passed on orig production car. Not sure if thats true but the dealer played dumb when i asked if there was any TSB's. I could be way off though
