Although it can be seen, there is no way one can access the sensor from down under. I always wondered how it was done from underneath in one of the tech articles.
It's pretty simple from above. The key is to slide the shroud above the turbo to the right. This will expose more of the sensor and allow a better angle to the nut.
First remove the coolant expansion tank and the Y-pipe

Disconnecting a vacuum tube just above the sensor also makes it easier to slide ones hand and forearm to access the sensor.

There she is ready to be removed. Notice the shroud moved to the right.

It is impossible to pull the sensor out while attached to the wire so I ended up cutting the wire. It was also impossible to follow the same path as the old wire. I ended up wiring further from the engine along a similar path.
Total time: Just over an hour. Book time is 2.5 hours.
Best tool for the job: A stubby 17mm wrench.

Ended up buying from a forum sponsor genuinevwaudiparts (Miramar Audi). $240 out the door. In addition to shipping, paid CA sales tax.

there are two banks! Cheaper than getting a new car in the long run I guess.
Someone here mentioned getting it for $210 somewhere.
