Default Eibach Springs

I just bought a set of Eibach Pro-Kit springs for my 2000 A6 2.8 Quattro. The springs didn't come with instructions! Two of the 4 springs are longer than the other 2. Can someone tell me whether the longer springs are for the front or for the rear? Many thanks.

Default Are you going to install them yourself?

If not, don't worry about it. Your installer will know which go where. I just had Eibach springs and shocks installed and was also surprised that neither came with instructions. When I pointed it out to my installer, he just laughed at me.

Default Did you like the new set up?

Do you think I can do away without changing the shocks? I have the sport suspension. How much are the dampers alone?

Default The new set-up is fantastic.

Keep in mind, I have a 2.8 quattro so I didn't start out with a sport suspension. (To be honest, I don't know which components i.e. shocks, springs, or both are different with the sport suspension.) I was very torn as to whether or not to change the dampers when doing the springs. Many here offered helpful advice; it was pretty much an even split between "You'll be very unhappy if you don't install the dampers" and "The OEM shocks will work just fine with the new springs". I got the same mixed responses from installers.

The Eibach web site clearly states that the Pro Kit springs are designed to work with OEM shocks. Advocates of installing the Eibach dampers insist that failure to do so will result in a bouncy ride and rapid wear-out of the OEM shocks.

It's a tough call. You don't want to needlessly replace the shocks but on the other hand, if you end up needing to, you might as well do it with the springs so you only pay for the labor one time. (Labor is the same for springs + shocks as it is for springs alone.) In the end, I ended up doing it all at once. I wasn't sure that I really needed to, but I knew that I wouldn't be disappointed with the results. I got the Pro System for $699, which was an additional $464 vs. the price of the Pro Kit (springs only). For the extra $464, I was guaranteed a great result. Of course, it's entirely possible that I'd have been happy with the results of springs only. If not, however, then I'd have had to pay over $500 to buy the shocks separately AND another $350 or so to have them installed.

In the end, I have no regrets. The car feels great (probably much like a "real" A6, i.e. a 2.7T or 4.2!), looks great, and there's no second-guessing whether or not I should have gone with shocks.

Regarding price, I got the Pro System for $699 at Shox.com. They sell the Pro Kit for $235. Shox.com was great to deal with and I recommend them highly.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

- Mike
