Engine Oil Additive - Good Idea?
#2
Are there ever any good reasons for using one at all?
It's all snake oil. If an additive existed and it was proven to be beneficial to the engine, Mobil 1 would added it to it's ingredients by now.

Reasons ? 1. You can harm your engine. 2. Company is in Canada outside US legal jurisdiction.

Yes, that's the stuff I've been using in my '83 Olds Cutlass 305 for the last 8 years. I noticed immdiately after adding it that the engine turned-over more easily at start-up and it seemed to idled more easily (I have no data to back this up just my subjective observations).
Could you elaborate on how the damage would be caused. I imagine Audi would not approve of it and would probably void my warranty - that would be reason enough not to do it but that doesn't convince me it's a bad thing by itself. These are the same people who keep telling me that the tranny oil is good for the life of the car!
Thanks for your input.

When's the last time...
you heard of an engine failure from lack of lubrication? It would do far more harm than good by restricting oil flow through the very tight clearances in modern engines. Same reason that you shouldn't use heavy single weight oil anymore.
