Default Engine removal problem- it is stuck!

I've been trying to remove my 2.7t engine for the better part of a day. I think everything is disconnected (mounts, exhaust, drive shaft from transmission, shifter linkage, hoses, wireharnesses, etc.) Something prevents it from moving forward, although it floats freely hanging from the engine hoist up, down and side to side.

Does the drive shaft have a circlip or snap ring that needs to be removed? What could be holding it in?

By the way, I was pulling so hard with the engine hoist that the car started to slide off of the jack stands.

Thanks for your help.

Did you follow an instruction set?
Or just wing it?
Only thing I can suggest is get a Bentley manual oe eBahn and follow it.

Stick or auto? Torque converter unbolted and separated from flex plate?

I got the impression he was pulling the engine/trans assembly since he released the axle shafts.

I still think he needs the manual and the list of things to do.

And I'm too lazy to look it up and transcribe it from eBahn.

It's a 6-speed manual, and yes I'm trying to pull the whole thing in one shot.

I didn't follow the Bentley manual procedures, but I went back through my Bentley and Ebahn to see if I missed anything obvious. There are certain things like removing the nut at the top of the turbos that I didn't do - but the turbos are attached to the motor and I don't see any hard oil lines back there. Everywhere I can see with a flashlight is disconnected, and like I mentioned - the motor is hanging loosely by the hoist.

The motor is blown (crashed valves), and I'm removing it for the 6-speed trans only. If I have to go back through step by step, I will, but I'd rather get it out quick and dirty. There are either some oil lines connected to the turbos that I can't see, or the drive shaft is more than just a slip joint into the rear of the transmission. The exhaust is cut and shift boot and linkage are completely free under the car, so I really can't see any other possible connection points.

Wel, that's a different story entirely. First, bent valves is usually a minor inconvenience rather that a "crashed" engine. Second, has the shift linkage been disconnected? Are the trans mounts clear of the subframe?

All amounts to perspective, and how much money one wants to shovel into a 13 YO car. Considering the machining work and/ possibly head replacement (assuming I left the dinged up pistons alone and all of the labor was done by myself), plus the additional parts would likely exceed the value of the car. The minor inconvenience is stripping and selling the valuable parts before washing my hands of it.

And yes, the shift linkage is disconnected, and as shown in the photos, the transmission mounts are clear of the subframe. I assume there is not a top transmission mount I am missing - at least Bentley does not mention anything other than the two subframe mounts.

Most people would drop the trans from the engine rather than pull the engine/trans combination.

I've never seen a dealer tech replace a clutch by pulling an entire engine/trans.

Since the engine/trans are hanging loose, just unbolt the transmission/bellhousing and get the transmission.

I may well end up taking your advise. I was also thinking that I could pull the turbos while the motor was out and maybe get something for them, but my time is quickly eating up any value that the turbos have through messing with this thing. Those top bell housing bolts look a bit challenging to get to, but unless I can quickly figure out how to pull the whole thing, I'll separate the two and leave the motor in there.
Thanks

isle,

sad to see you gutting it, i would have removed the heads to inspect damage before parting out.... you very well could have the motor rebuilt for 1000 or less if you can do most of the work yourself
