Default engine start-up concern/question....

Greetings all,

I tried to do a search on my specific question/concern but I could not find a definitive post that was similar to my issue.

Hopefully you all can provide input:

As background, this ONLY happens first thing every morning when I first start the car after it's been resting through the whole night. For the past several days, there has been an issue with starting up the engine. Here is the process flow:

1. When I first start up the car it starts really smooth like it normally should

2. While the car is still in "Park", a loud rumble jumps in after 2-3 seconds after initial startup. The rumble sounds very much like a muffled idling boat engine.

3. Even when I put the car into "Drive" the rumble is still there. Also to note, the noise increases with an increase in acceleration.

4. After I drive down the road for about 1 minute, the rumble completely goes away and the engine will sound and run really smooth.

Any thoughts?

See also the "side issue" below

*********************
side issue: I also noticed on morning start up that when I initially put the car into drive and accelerate lightly (very little gas is applied) it will hold 1st gear all the way up to 3000 RPMs. Usually on light acceleration, 1st gear will immediately shift into 2nd gear at around 1500 RPMs. Any thoughts????
*********************

I recently brought in my car to the local Audi dealership for the 30K mile maintenance; do you think Audi did something different to the car to make it do this? I told them that the car sort of vibrated when parked and they said (as a solution) they adjusted the idle. Could this be causing the morning start-up issue?

Thanks all!

Default Noise just sounds like the secondary air injection....

....pump. You probably have a loose hose on it. You'll probably get an MIL for it pretty soon.

The cold shifting is normal.

Default Make sure the vacuum hose for the air injection system is on properly

Go to this recent post about the same thing, the vacuum hoses on the 5 valve V8 motors shrinks for some reason, if so, the air pump is dead heading versus pumping into the exhaust.

Default AoA says it is the vacuum pump for the emission system and that it is normal..

I'm just wondering why it is so loud and noticeable now?
