Evap system problem..........................(long)

I'm trying to diagnose an issue with my dad's 2002 S6. For a while he had a CEL for a 16825 evap incorrect flow fault code. I would clear the code, and three days later it would return. We did this probably 4 times, and each time the code would return on day #3. I did some research (thanks AW) and decided to replace the purge valve. No CEL for three weeks! I temporarily claimed victory. Two days ago there's a CEL, then it turns off by itself (wtf?!). I VAG'd the car today and the 16825 code returned. Is there something upstream or downstream of the purge valve I should look at replacing next? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

same symptoms.. (I have a 2.7t however)CEL came on and went away on it's own. Came back a few days later, stayed on 3 days so I made the appointment with the dealer for 4 days out. Two days before appointment, CEL goes away again. Dealer found the codes and replaced the Purge value under warranty.
According to the invoice "computer diagnosis P0442, I found evap purge valve sticking, R&R"
I've got to get a VAG just to play and learn more about these cars.

Yes. And here's how it works:
quattroworld.com Forums: N80 Evaporative Emissions Frequency Control Valve and Canister info
But don't just replace it. Take it out, find the little metal screen, remove it, clean it.
Now clean the inside (carb cleaner). Make blow through it.
Make sure the control wiring plug is clean. It controls the opening and closing. Could be intermittent either due to a bad wire or more likely dirty contact.
You can put the cleaned valve back in, but better yet, splice a cheap-o fuel filter in line with it - problem will now stay gone. Credit to TJ here.
