I have the factory 17" sport wheel and they are running 225/17/45 and I want to see if I can goto 235/45/17 on tire change? Reccomendations I am leaning toward Pilot Sport (my old Benz standard on CLK430) Any other ideas????

I went from a 255X40 to 265X40 on my 4.2 without a hitch, and that's with a much lower ride height (H&R coilovers). I went up two sizes on my previous 2.8/standard wheels and ride height.

235/45r17 IS the standard size for the A6 2.7T with the 17in sport package. The rolling size with this combo is 79.5 inches. You are rolling 78.4 inchs per rev, or approx 1.6% off. FYI, Your tires are S4 sized maybe your wheels came from a S4 owner?

The 235/45/17 is listed as the biggest tire that can safely go on that size wheel 17x7.5'. I normally try to have a tire that is in the middle or small range of what is acceptable for the wheel. In other words, if the wheel can handle from 205-235 I would want to be closer to the 205 than the 235 size. The reason for this is that a wide tire for a certain wheel size will be poorly supported and will not handle well.
If you look at tire sizes vs wheel size on very high performance cars you will see that they typically use relatively narrow tires vs the wheel width. I have thought about going to wider tires also but I think I would want to go to an 8" or 8.5" wide rim at the same time.

I'm not sure why but I think Audi uses the 225/45-17's for all of their sport models, in the USA market, for consistency purposes. The non-sport A6 2.7 tires are 215/55-16 which would actually make the 235/45 the correct size from a diameter perspective so, Audi's fitment practice is puzzling
The Audi sport wheels have an ET offset of 43mm and are 7.5" wide. This is a key difference from most aftermarket wheels. Audi mounts 235/45-17's on these wheels for the German market. I've been running Bridgestone S02-PP 235/45's on my Audi factory "BBS" RC wheels and they work just fine.
Hope this helps.

that 235 is fine. I just got Bridgestone RE730 235/45 ZR 17 on these wheels, they look great and the car drives better that with the 225/45's they came on. As tarheel says the original 16's come with 215/55 and 235/45 x 17 is a perfect match in size for the upgrade. I wonder if Audi re-calibrate the speedo for US cars with 225/45/17 because the diameter is smaller and would change the gearing on these cars????

... but that freaks me out... the 235/45 are an exact match in rolling size. In Europe, (well France at least) the standard size on the sport package is 235/45-17.
