Default Older maint schedules vs. the newer ones::: thoughts from a sort of newby

When I first got my car, I got a maint schedule and thought I had the straight info on the needed/required intervals for scheduled maint. This schedule I had was dated 01/2002.

After reading the group's posts here on this forum, I realized that I had an older schedule and things had changed..... specifically, the TB intervals. Older was scheduled @ 105k, and the newer prevailing attitude is at 70k. The new Bentley manual highlights this interval as well.

I recently did my TB maint, at 74k, I ordered parts that cost me 385.xxUSD, and paid my indy 600.00USD. +good microbrew from here in Chapel Hill. Car runs like a new one!

Audi dealership service mgrs will tell you that the early 70k interval is the best, however I had my "crap detector" set to high while in there.... dealer service = stealer service IMHO.

What 5speed6 said is what I'd go with. Many other posters on this forum indicated that the 70k interval is the correct one. Also what he said about doing the WP Belt, tensioner, etc is best. If you do a search on this forum's postings [this search engine is really really your friend, use it!] you can find a complete listing of replacement parts, and step-by-step instructions complete w/ photos.

Good luck!

Default Do all of your posts have to be so acerbic? Your knowledge of things Audi

and automobiles is obviously vast, but your presentation style is off-putting.

Not true! All WPs use an integral shaft cartridge bearing, a sealed double row ball bearing assy.

Default Labor is much more than the cost of the parts. I'm a firm believer in changing all the parts once

you've had to open up something. I know that new parts can fail and some old ones can last just about forever; but you have to go with the odds. I say replace everything the TB touches. I have my 2.8L 30V in today getting TB and the works R&R'ed. Car has 99,928 miles on it (only because the warranty was 10 yr/100k miles and the manual called for the 105k mile replacement). I wouldn't risk 1 day out of warranty over 70k miles, but that's just me.

Default Many dealers will use cheap, remanufactured parts - not saying all remanf parts are crap, but if you

think ALL dealers will use top line parts, you are sadly mistaken.

Default The bearing cartridge seldom is the cause of WP failure. Rather, the coolant retaining shaft seal,..

a carbon face seal running on (hopefully) a lapped ceramic fixed mating surface. Cheap designs run the spring loaded carbon element against the cast iron hub of the impeller, = very short life.

Why bother with "acerbic" and get "your" wrong? ;-)
