63k TB-WP---Well I bit the bullet and 9-Benjamins later.....
got the works-TB, WP tensioner etc'. (63K)
My mechanic told me the the problem with the original WP is the plastic impeller which fails. The new one is metal.
Also told me they are seeing a lot of Passat TBs failing at 60K-90K

One at 47k, car idling at red light. Belt popped.
Bent 3 valves, ruined head. Thankfully, warranty covered it. Golf with 2.0L engine.
Other, was on 16v golf. Luckily, the belt let go when I hit the key. No damage.
Both failed *before* the factory service interval.

In fairness, the belts on those older motors weren't the huge reinforced belts on the V6 and V8 Audi
engines.. I had a belt let go all on it's own on a 1.8 16v Scirocco too...
