I have a 2000 audi a6 2.8. it currently has a K&N Air filter i have read in an article that the filter doesn't really do anything but just clean the air that goes into the engine, should i invest to get a cold air intake to let my car breath better? or just keep the filter?

Neither. Restore it back to its stock condition. There's not much you can do to a 2.8 other than supercharging it...the stock air filter/box already has a cold air intake.
People put a K&N on and think it increases flow...it doesn't. And if you don't put the K&N in a box with a duct to the outside, you're just sucking hot engine compartment air.
2.8 is generally a dog; don't try to turn it into a greyhound.
