Fix for "brake shake" and questions on auto trans fluid/oil filter OEM need
Hi.
Resurfaced all the rotors and NO MORE SHAKING....AUDI has dealers thinking you need new rotors every time....and their own TSB shows an on-vehicle shaver......for resurfacing the rotors.
I have tons of rotor left, and a new master mechanic to use that is 20% of the dealer cost and probably a lot better (he showed me his 80,000 dollars worth of snap on tools and his references). He left a local high end dealer because he grew tired (morals) of doing work that was not needed.....
Why is a "major service" (aka: air filter, plugs, oil, oil filter, and pollen filte) $625 at the local VAG dealer...this guy is parts plus $120... My guy checked the whole thing out better than anyone I have had at an Audi dealer.....imho.
Anyway, do I really need Audi tranny fluid, oil filters, and air filters....can I get top of the line aftermarket "correct" synthetic tranny fluid, air and oil filters..... Is a Bosch or K&N oil filter really inferior to an Audi OEM filter which could be a Bosch or a Mann? My guess is that high end consumer parts here are possibly superior to the OEM stuff.
Thanks.
FYI: The brake job took him 3 hours and was 220 total....perfect (the pads were recenly replaced. BTW, stock 2.7T fronts are huge...huge..amazing. It is hard for me to believe a street car could really need more! He put a perfect pattern on the rotors (I was a machinist in a former life and his work was good work). Even on the gentle ride home, braking is much better.

Re: auto trans fluid
Here's what I've found recently on Audi auto trans fluid:
For my 99 Avant with Tiptronic, the manual calls for G 052 162 A2 fluid (this is a 1 liter container, VW G 052 162 A1 is a 0.5 liter container of the same stuff). ZF specs ESSO LT 71141 fluid for this transmission. The local import parts place sells Pentosin ATF1, which is equivalent (conforms to VW TL 52162) for about 1/2 the price that the local Audi dealer wants for the VW/Audi container (and the Pentosin is still $10/liter).
I think you need to use one of these fluids - anything not equivalent to the ESSO LT71141 WILL destroy the tranny.

I forget the actual numbers, but amsoil quotes filtration rates
that are unheard of, example if OEM filter shows filtration of .1 microns per unit, Amsoil shows filtration of .001 or something like that. In any case the published rate on the back of the filter is staggering! Put amsoil in my GMC and increased mileage by about .6 per gallon. A6 is next on the list. BTW amsoil also recommends oil change intervals at 25000 miles or one year!!!

Sounds like you have found a reasonably priced master mechnaic.....
Follow the commentary on this forum, and soon you will know that there are some Audi dealers out there who are also reasonable. And there are others that regarding your ownership of a German import as their license to steal from you. Someone mentioned here the other week about being charged $300 for a battery change by an Audi dealer.....Unforunately, for VAG, the record of service from one dealer to the next is very mixed.

Use Audi ATF fluid
I wouldn't use anything else....it's really not worth all the hassle of researching it and possibly having a problem down the road. It's about $17/qt at the dealer and you'll need 6-7 quarts. You're not going to save that much money.
