Default flex exhaust leaks and cat codes

How can you tell if you have a small leak in the flex pipes? Other posts (bentley also) make reference to exhaust leaks and cat inefficiency. I see some loose threads on my passenger side flex pipe - kind of looks like I bottomed out at some point. But how can you actually tell if you have a leak? The car has become louder over time (195k) but I just chalked that up to age. Middle portion of the exhaust system does 'look' like there are some leaks at one of the joints. How far back does an exhaust leak go where cat efficiency might be affected? Car is 03 A6 Avant. Original stock exhaust.

Thanks in advance,
AJG

You should be able to hear it if you get under there. You might also see evidence of exhaust smoke on the back side of any leak. Might be a blackish stain.

From my experience pantyhose are never left in a glove compartment "accidentally".
