Default Freeway miles?

I'm looking for a used A6 as are some others here. A few posts down it mentions a certain A6 has 1xx,xxx miles but they're "freeway miles". I heard this term used in the past too. Is there something I'm missing here? I always thought miles were miles?

Default "Freeway" miles are supposed to be better on a car than "City" or stop and go traffic miles. But I

too think miles are miles. But I could be wrong. I have never seen a study (to be honest I never looked for one) that supports the belief/theory/myth that "freeway" miles are ACTUALLY better on a car than "City" or stop and go traffic miles.

Default Freeway (or highway) miles means that the car was primarily driven at highway speeds rather than...

stop 'n go driving in city traffic. Highway driving is much easier on the engine/driveline/suspension and brakes than the stop 'n go driving usually found in the urban areas. If you located an A6 with freeway miles vs. another A6 driven in city with the same miles, then the freeway driven car would be better of the two (assuming all the maint items have been properly maintained as scheduled).

Default Miles are not miles ;-)

The stop and start and frequent cold starts are really tough on any mechanical component in the car. Just consider how often you would lock and unlock a car door over 10,000 miles in the city compared to just driving down a highway for a few hours.

Default It means they didnt have to wear the brakes stopping for tolls :-)

Seriously, it means highway driving, whcih implies much less wear and tear, for a multitude of reasons. But words are free, get proof, like documentation of a really long commute, or a house in Montreal.

Default I agree. City driving typically is more taxing on the consumables... (brakes, tires, fluid

changing intervals. IMO, some owners are simply harder/easier on cars than others.

Default miles arent necesarily miles

it not really about about engine wear, because in that case miles are pretty much miles, although, its true there is less load on the engine while crusing at 60mph than accelerating from a stop to 20mph. They're mainly talking about the load and stress put on the moving parts, such as tranny and drive axels. when accelerating compared to crusing on the highway.

Default That's true in theory. But how can anyone verify that of the numbers of miles on the odometer, how

many are TRULY "highway/freeway" miles. I would never rely on such a statement when deciding on making a purchase. Caveat Emptor.
