I own a 2004 A6 2.7T S-Line. I am trying to order some pads and possibly rotors for it. On www.Autoanything.com the A6 2.7T has two submodels; one with 2 brake pad per wheel and one with 4 brake pad per wheel. How can you tell how many front brake pads you need for a particular model? Can you tell by model or you pretty much have to see it to know? ~ Thanks

Best way is to take it apart and look. If ou know what you're looking for, you can probably see it through the wheel, but if you've never taken apart the 8 pad/dual piston calipers and seen the pads, it may be difficult to tell...

I have the same car and replaced all the brake pads and rear rotors myself. I had the front rotors turned however. With the S-Line you have to check the rotor hat depth as it is different than other models.
I highly doubt you will have the 4 pad per wheel calipers. Your best bet is to take apart one front and one rear caliper. You will need to remove the rotor in order to measure the rotor hat depth too.

There ARE no 4 pad OEM rear calipers IIRC...

Another way is to look at the caliper with the wheel off...even if you can't count so good or don't know what you're looking for (perhaps that's God's way of saying don't eff with brakes!!...and see if there are the thick wire retainers on the outside of the caliper. The ATE calipers have no wire retainers IIRC.
Here's probably one of the better DIY and pics I've seen of the HP2 caliper from the outside. They're on an A8 but the caliper design is essentially the same.

I did pads and rotors on my '04 s-line. Mine has the ate calipers, with the big offset rotors. I got oem rotors and ate pads. If u remove the wheel to check for the offset, check the caliper, mine had ate stamped on it. Cheaper pads i found on rockauto.com
