My car has been giving a rattling/grinding noise from the front drivers wheel. I took it in to have it diagnosed because I didn't see anything that looked too bad. They diagnosed it as needing a new drivers strut and strut mount.

Anyone ever done this job? I have the bentley manual coming but I'm wondering if the $800 they quoted is worth it on this job.

I should add that the $800 quoted included both the front struts and mounts.

Funny because the C5 A6 doesn't have a strut or a strut bearing.

It uses shocks, and has a front shock bushing.
It's entirely possible the shocks are bad. The shock bushing doesn't fail too often in my experience.
It's more often the control arms which go bad.
