Default front tire roll

Good day all!

I have this rather curvy road that I take on my morning commute to avoid my dreaded Hwy 680 (worse commute in the SF Bay area). My 2000 2.7T, Manual does really well, except for some of the tighter turns. When I hit the corner hot, I know the front outside tire rolls over onto the sidewall. Tire inflation is good. The wheel/tire combination is stock. I know the R rated tires are not best suited for this. Can someone make a personal recomendation as to the wheel/tire combination which they don't experience tire squeal and tire roll? I will be moving to a 17" wheel I think, rather than an 18". Too much wheel and not enough tire. Too stiff I am afraid for just highway driving.

Please offer some suggestions?

Thanks in addvance!

Default Some of 2.7T gang have gone to 235/45-17's.

Dunlop Sp Sport 9000's get good press here. More of a quieter tire, gives up some dry grip, good in wet.
Wheels are tough, Some have gotten the Stock S4 rim. I would suggest try Tirerack.com. Eddie@tirerack usually posts in wheel/tire forum.

Default Re: front tire roll

I have 235/45/17 wheels with Bridgestones S02 Pole Position in my 2.7T 6sp, PSK suspension. Inflated at 37psi all around, I don't think you can roll over the sidewall, no matter how hard you try (and I've tried pretty hard going both up and down Hwy 9 between Saratoga and Skyline and Hwy 84 between Alpine Rd. and La Honda). I'm sure that Dunlops 9000. Pirelli PZero and several other tires would do well too. Others have gone 235/40/18, but most 18" wheels are 8.5"wide and I feel that a 235 tire is not quite enough to protect them from curbs, carwash rails, etc.

Default Calaveras off of 84? Take the same short cut-

I think we both have the same problem, though I always thought it was the ABS kicking in, versus the tire's sidewall.

I'm also thinking about 17", but not for a while. Either way, see around the bend.

Default You wanna' get rid of roll, increase the pressure

At the track in my slightly ligher S4, I run 44F/41R. Anything less than 42, and the front's will roll a lot. Even at 44, the cheap RE040's would roll more then the Yokohama AVS Sport's I switched to. The recommended tire pressure is for touring and driving comfort, not aggressive cornering.

I have that exact size and love them. A friend drove my PSK with the uuc shifter (he has psk with stock wheels/tires no shifter) and remarked the handling was like night and day. He also liked the shifter but was most impressed with the feel/handling change. They are good ol RE71's and I have them at 38 all around. No noticeable scrub on any of them yet. Steve.

Default Other considerations...

44F/41R certainly makes sense to reduce the tire roll but there is another consideration here to keep in mind. There is an ideal pressure for each tire/car combo that gives the tire the best contact patch. Any pressure in excess of the pressure will reduce the size of the contact patch and cause the tire to ride on the "crown" of the tread. Result...less tire roll in the corners but less overall traction. Abnormal tread wear is another affect but depending on the mission may not be important to some. One must way the advantages against the disadvantages of over/underinflating tires to achieve the best desired results for the task at hand.

Just my 2 cents worth!

Default Others are giving you good advice. If you don't want to loose too much in ride go with the Z rated

Dunlop 9000's. I would go to 17" rims. I have the spt. pkg. wheels on my 4.2 17 X 8 with Z rated 255/40 Pirelli 6000's and am happy with the ride/handling compromise. They're also pretty good in the wet. They do get noisy when pushed though. BTW your tires are probably H rated. R stands for radial. Good luck.
