Default FSI in 2002 . . .

If you haven't seen it, front page of AW has an article on FSI direct injection for gasoline engines. Says more power AND better mileage, and it will start showing up on passenger cars in calendar year '02. Wonder what the power improvements look like compared to an engine with standard fuel injection technology? Are we talking 1% or 20%?

Default power improvements?

I thought DI was good for fuel economy, not power improvements. Anyone have some links for me?

We won't have DI in the US until we are rid of sulfur in our gas nationwide. I think that is 2003.

The R8 uses it.

Default this article is about 85% fuel efficiency and 15% power output

Kind of what I thought. It is primarily for fuel efficiency.

Any increase in power output on the R8 by fuel systems is limited anyway because the restrictor plate limits the air intake. It takes both more air and more fuel to get more power. So really the only power increase from DI in the R8 should be because it can maintain stoichastic ratios more of the time.

I'll take it either way. In most cases you can use the increase of fuel efficiency to offset an increase in power via other means anyway. So in practice DI could lead to more power from the same fuel or same power from less fuel. Win win.
