Default fuel gauge?

I left the gas cap on the pump the other day from my 98 A6 2.8Q. I drove about 300 miles before I could replace it, and now the gauge doesn't work - goes down to about 3/4 when it should be at 1/4. Is the fuel sender shot just from leaving the cap off?

Default Did you get a check engine light?

No gas cap really freaks out the fuel systems on modern cars. It sounds like you need to "reboot" the electronics. I suggest you fill the tank to the brim and tightly snug down the gas cap. If things don't settle down after a few days, it's time to visit the garage. It's not the sending units.
