shop install pieces of 2.25" pipe, then expand one end of each to meet up with the downpipes.

Do you WANT to pollute more? Would you like it if somebody went and peed on YOUR lawn? Just a few questions for you to consider before putting more crap into the atmosphere.
Good luck - I hope your CEL issues resolve themselves without resorting to drastic measures. It it's any help, I recently heard a nasty noise coming from the same area and it turned out to be a corroded exhaust flange. $70 part made the noise & problem go away.
