GEARBOX COMPUTER CRASHING

I am writing about my friends Audi A6. It is a 1994 Model with a 4 speed auto gearbox. There is a few problems with it:
1. When driving "lazily" the change between 2nd and 3rd produces a small squeak.
2. Recently, when the gearbox is hot, and a gear is selected there is a major crash of the gearbox computer. When coming to a stop and selecting reverse to park the car, the vehicle seems to select neutral. When selecting a gear with the stick, the car seems to select any gear it wants. The selection is random. If the 1st gear is selected and the vehicle is driven, the gearbox changes through it's gears like normal.
Please help

Frankly, your problem doesn't sound good. It pretty much points out why there are shops which manage to specialize in transmission repairs. Automatic trannies are very complex hydraulic devices.
If you are lucky, you merely have a selector problem. Very probably you are not lucky and you have a hydraulic/internal mechanical problem. This is probably going to get expensive real fast.
(Note)
I do know that there are computers that shift trannies nowadays. I'm not sure about 1994 Audis though. But anyway, even the current "computer shifted" trannies really just the computer to move a couple valves to cause the hydraulics to make the tranny shift itself. This way you have a failsafe mode. Also, the computer is never involved in the lever selecting a gear.

has very little to do with the basic function, just refinements. Is this a QTR or Front Track ? The FWD version should be relatively inexpensive and easy to find. I've been told that QTR is more difficult.

It turned out not to be the computer. More of a fault on the brake pedal "gear restritcor" you know when you have to brake before selecting a driving gear. A £240 total bill for that, the comp re-set and a service.
