Default Gearbox info. The ZF site.

If you look at the auto transmission, you can see the max torque rating ( conversion is 0.7376 for NM to lb ft ). Keep in mind that this is the highest rating the trans can be made to go. The manufacturer ( Audi, Merc, etc ) can specify a run with certain tolerances below that level.

http://www.zf.com/defaultx.asp?lang=1&gbShortcut=Z&loadmenu=12&id=46 5&mID=465&topic

Default I am going to assume that...

The 2.7T and 4.2 share the same transmission with the A8, as the 5HP19FL/FLA found on the 2.8 is rated for about 228lb-ft. The 5HP24A has the higher rating of 346lb-ft (a figure met and exceeded by some with chips, as you know) and is used in the A8, and I assume the S8 as well... assuming the current transmissions ZF sells, there is no way the biturbo V8 models will take a 5-speed from ZF. Maybe a 6-speed, which can handle 568lb-ft. Hmm, too bad Audi has an excuse to offer an automatic on the RS6. Any info or ideas as to why Audi hasn't gone with a 6-speed auto yet?

Default April, I had a printout of that a few months ago, and it said 420nm for the HP 24A trans

and the site you have has it listed at 470nm on the "entire list" section and the spec sheet for the HP24A shows 430nm (same as the HP24). DO you think the 470nm on the "list" is a misprint?

Default What site did you get your info from ? Remember that Audi can have ZF make a tranny with lower

torque tolerence.

I think the pic of the specs was from the same site you listed.
When I went to your site in the above post, it show a list of the trannies and their max lbs, the HP24A shows 470nm. If you click on the tranny name it gives you the specs sheets, the 2nd page states 420nm for that same tranny? I was just curious why they would list 470nm for the HP24A and then show it being 420nm on the 2nd page of specs? We have the HP24A right???

Default Hmm, those 6 gear autos are going into BMW 7 series first :-(

I thought Audi were meant to be sourcing a 6 gear auto from ZF as well? It would perk up the S6 and S8 a bit to have 6 gear auto boxes wouldn't it?

To all those with an S6 on order/their wish list - I know it doesn't need much perking up, but hey it wouldn't be bad would it? ;-)

ZF Partner Press release

Default Well then, I would go with the more conservative figure. Too many blown trannies to believe

otherwise.
