I'm working to get my 'project' 99 A6 Avant on the road again.
I do not have the radiator support and other front end parts on yet. But I want to remove the old gas [2 years old - half full] out of the tank.
I've search the 'forum' and checked the Bentley manual with no luck. I also removed the bango fitting at the fuel filter [1 oz leaked out]; and tried using a plastic hose down the gas filler neck [blocked at about 20" into filler neck].
With the ignition on, should I hear the fuel pump, or see fuel flowing at the open line at the fuel filter? Maybe my fuel pump is dead. I'd rather not remove the fuel pump [unless it is dead] to access the tank, then syphon the gasoline out.
Thanks for any ideas/assistance

You will want to have a helper ready to disconnect the fuel pump as the can fills. I had to do this on a project car that I had to remove the tank on. Works great.
I also agree that the fuel may well be bad, especially if your area uses "oxygenated" fuel. I had about seven gallons in my old Triumph for two years. It was pretty nasty, and the car wouldn't run right until I drained and refilled it.
The problem is what to do with the old gas. If it is bad, you not going to want to use it is something else.
