My TT's windshield is very pockmarked and it helped. Not 100% but it helped.
Otherwise Stoner's Liquid Glass is the biblical strength cleaner. Watch out for the GM stuff in close quarters. It also works great but it's noxious!

Audi used to send kits with clay for doing this, but ran out.
I'm not sure the best cleaner/lubricant to use with the clay. Either a good auto (not home) window cleaner based on alcohol (not ammonia), or perhaps an external detailing spray which I know is not harmful to the clay.
I'll be trying this soon myself.
I would NOT use any abrasive. No need. Clay is safer and, combined with solvent-based cleaners, should do fine.

It comes in different formulas, you need the gentlest one that's hardest to find (in the old-fashioned yellow and red container).
But be aware that the package clearly states Do Not Use on Windshields. If your windshield is just dirty, try Wurth Glass Cleaner. If it needs work, Griot's makes various strengths of polishes for glass. And Eastwood sells glass repair kits too.

I would add that if you choose to use newspaper, which I used to, not only does the ink get all over your hands, but the newspaper ***** up and then shreds as you use it! Ultra-messy.
For a while I was also using moving paper, which is really just unused newsprint paper.
There's also a pink polish called Glass Wax that is easily found. The problem with that is, you put it on like car wax,let it dry and then buff off. But it goes on very thickly and then the buffed bits fall all over everything and collapse into dust when you try and pick them up. Not good for interior use, OK on the outside once in a while.
