I just got a replacement second key/remote. I followed the directions in the manual to sync it but its not working (press a button then lock or unlock a door with the key). Is there another trick to this? Our other remote still works fine. The car is a '99 A6 by the way.
Thanks,
Mike

Where'd you get the new (to you anyway) one? If from the dealer, don't they do that for you? If from a private party, I'd like to hear about how you went about doing that. Because that's what I'm thinking of doing. If from a private party, how or you going to get the metal key atached to the remote?

Take the key you DO NOT want to program and put it in the ignition. Turn it one click forward.
Close and lock the drivers door with the second key.
On the second key (the one in the drivers door) press the 'UNLOCK' button ONCE only. The lights will flash on the car, but the doors will remain locked
With the second key still in the drivers door, unlock then lock the door again.
Pull the key from the slot and test remote functions.
Open drivers door, remove key from ignition.
If both of your remotes don't work, do the above for the first key, but on step #3, press the 'UNLOCK' button twice. The lights will flash twice, then continue on with step #4.
I bought a remote on EBAY for $25 and had a key cut for about $40 from the dealer. Put them togehter and programmed myself. Dealer wanted about $170 for the whole shebang.

and they wouldnt reprogram it without an appointment (they were super busy) so i guess unless you have a good rapport with the dealer and they do it for you for free, youre golden. if not, follow these instructions, they worked for me.

Thanks for everyone's help. It was Cogsworth33's instructions that worked for me. The manual doesn't say anything even remotely close to that.
Thanks again
