Correct, it is float system but it extremely sensitive. What happens to the.....
nozzle is that the end where the hole is which allows the air to be drawn in, gets bent and curled over causing the nozzle to trip all the time due to excess spray or not trip soon enough due to the bent alloy acting like a shroud over the sensing hole.

For those interested, I found this.....

I'm bumping this thread to see if anyone knows whether or not this is a common problem with our cars. This has happened twice in the past couple months, at two different gas stations. One was when I was driving the car, the other was when I let someone borrow it and they filled up my tank for me.
It seems like it's definitely an issue with air being trapped in the tank, which prevents gas from tripping the fill nozzle. This is the only car I've ever had that builds up enough pressure in the tank that it actually makes a loud hissing noise for 15-20 seconds while the pressure is released after the cap is unscrewed. This happens every time I fill up. I usually wait for all the air pressure to release before I start filling the car.
I really would love to know a fix for this, as it's extremely inconvenient and potentially dangerous. If anyone knows what I can do, please share. I couldn't find anything useful when I searched.

This happened to me once about 9 of 10 months ago. Stopped at a gas station that I don't frequent much and had full service. The guy put the pump in and took off to fill another car. I was on empty, so I expected about 17.5 gallons. It seemed to be taking a long time, so I turned and looked and it was on 20+ gallons. I hopped from the car, with the attendant looking at me like, "What does he think he's doing" and shut the pump off as quickly as possible, with over 21 gallons in the tank. Luckily the attendant came over and asked what was wrong - I told him there's no way 21 gallons is in my tank
He pulled the pump as I stepped back and watched gas spray 3-4 feet all over the place. I was not happy - more about the evap system being damaged than the gas on the car. It came out with so much force that there was little on the car anyway.
It's been a while and never happened again and the evap system hasn't done anything to throw codes or indicate a problem....
Not sure what the issue is, never had that happen at any other pump, or with any other car - it could be either or a combination.
