Default Have an A4 - considering the 2.7T. Anyone out there make the switch?

I currently have a 99.5 A4 2.8QM. Considering upgrading to the A6 2.7T. I Took a 6 speed manual on a test drive. It is definitely different than the A4. The best way to describe it after my short drive is "more cushy" and a hell of a lot faster.

For those who have made the switch, are you happy you did? What took the most getting used to? Anything you really wish the A6 had that the A4 has?

Thanks for your insight!

Default Guess which car the Car Editor for Consumer Reports drives?....

It pains me to say so, but the guy responsible for tearing apart every car imaginable, bought an A4 for his own car. That should tell you something.

Default Traded 98 A4 1.8TQ for 01 A6 2.7T . . .

6 speed with sport package in January. So far we are quite happy with our A6 in spite of its shortcomings. The A6 is much more spacious and is a hell of a lot faster than our A4. The steering feel on the A4 was better. The A6's steering is overboosted. Also, our A4 was more trouble-free than the A6. So far our A6 has had electical problems with its turn signals and inoperative airbags. We are currently waiting for parts to fix the airbags.

Default Re: It depends on what you want

In February, I traded in a 99.5 A4 Avant 2.8QM (neuspeed springs/bilstein sport shocks, Ronal LV 225/45/17 Bridg. S02 PP) for a 2001 A6 2.7T (6 spd., Eibach/Koni, Ronal LZ 235/45/17 Rossos).

If you want handling, fun to drive, and maybe an occassional trip to the track, I think the A4 or S4 is the car to have. The 2.7T, even with the Eibach suspension, does not have the handling capabilities of my A4.

However, I made the change and like the 2.7T because it is more comfortable for me and passengers and I need to have a back seat that adults can sit in comfortably. Because the A4 is so cramped, I would not ask an adult to sit in the back seat of my A4. The A6 is better for longer trips. With the rear seats folded down it has almost as much room in the back as the A4 Avant. It is very fast and handles well for a car its size, but its not a track car, like you can make an A4 or S4.

Default Exactly

I had an A4 2.8qsm and an A6 together for a while. My A6 is a 2.8 so it isn't a totally valid comparo, but JeffreyL is quite right. I got tired of making excuses for the "rear seat" on the A4 and wanted/needed a car that could actually carry full-size carbon-based lifeforms. The A6 is more of a cruiser. Softer, bigger, quieter, but still sporting.

The A4 and A6 have different missions in life, which is good; why make two cars that are the same? If you are upgrading for more room, you will appreciate the A6. It still has that Audi DNA and its interior is considered the class of its class. However, if you still want a pocket rocket like an A4 2.8, you will be disappointed by almost anything. Gee, I still remember how that A4 would pull in 2nd and 3rd, and how sick I could make myself doing canyon driving with those Dunlop 8000Es (sigh).

Default I had a '96 A4 2.8QM and now have...

an '00 6-speed 2.7T. I put over 100,000 miles on my A4 and loved it. It was a bit underpowered, but otherwise a great car. The A6 was a perfect upgrade for me and is the best car I've ever owned. I use it for business, plus, having a 7 month old, the extra space really is nice.

I've upgraded to the Audi/Eibach springs, PSK sway bar, 17' Avus wheels with 235/45 Yokohama AVS tires. I plan to upgrade the shocks soon, so the suspension should be just about right.

I'm of the opinion that you can't have to much power (especially with quattro), but am not willing to risk any engine/warranty problems to upgrade the chip. Plus, the stock power ain't that bad!

Default Traded 97 A4 1.8Q-m for 00 A62.7-m. Never looked back...pro/con inside.

I made the move primarily because I wanted the biturbo V6/quattro/six speed set up and more room in the back seat. The A6 is my fourth Audi. The A4 (quattro/roof/cold weather) had a much sportier ride and was much more tossable but lacked in interior size/comfort. The A6 (roof/leather/xenon/bose/nav/pearl) is way more powerful..I can do things on the highway (e.g. passing) that never were possible in the A4. Having said that, the negative (i.e. floaty) handling characteristics of a non-sport A6 have been discussed extensively on this board.

In summary, I can't say I miss anything from the A4 and continue (1 year later) to enjoy every A6 driving experience.

Default I had a '97 A4 2.8MS

I had tried an A6 2.7 without the sport suspension and didn't like it at all... felt like a big boat to me.

I just happened to try an A6 2.7t Manual with the PSK Sport package just before I was going to place my order for an S4. I loved it & bought it.

I think of it as an S4 with a back seat...

Default Not sure I agree...

If you set up your A6 a bit (Eibachs, 17" wheels & tires) you can actually be competitive against smaller Audis. I've autocrossed mine against A4's and S4's, and actually beat a few. I've also spent some time on the track and the car felt great!

I know others on this forum have spent some time on the track with their A6's (Pete RD?) and have really enjoyed them.
