Default Have burning oil smell from passenger side. Took it in and they tightened the valve covers

but the smell is still there. How long does tightening the valve covers last until it leaks again. Could it still be leaking?

What to do?

Default Common issue on the 30V engines. Could be cam adjuster seals or cam/valve covers. It very well

could still be leaking. Worst case is that there is a defect in the head casting (I had this happen after 4 attempts at fixing the leak via gasket/seal replacement). I'm not suggesting this is your situation, but typically to fix this sort of leak requires replacement of the seals and gaskets, not just a simple retightening of the bolts. Dye in the oil will indicate where it is still leaking from - this was done on my car.

Default The 'right' way to do it is to replace the seals/gaskets.

I had the same thing, but replaced the cam adjuster and valve cover gaskets. I also 'decked' the valve covers, as they tend to warp over time...mine weren't too bad.

Check out the link below in my signature for my write-up and some photos.

Tightening the covers might stop/slow the leaking, but it's no guarantee. Give it a week for the remaining oil to burn off and see if the odor subsides or lessens.

Is this a dealer? They should know better than that.

Default Stop oil burning smell

I had this problem with 2000 A6 2.8L ATQ engine. Before I went to the trouble/expense of replacing the valve cover gasket and the cam adjuster seals, I did a few things.

I replaced the suction pump/purge valve (looks like black chicken's foot). When detaching hoses back there to get at the purge valve, I removed two check valves, one green that looks like a PCV, the other royal blue with small breather hoses attached. They are supposed to allow air to move one direction only. Mine allowed no air through. I sprayed some SeaFoam deep creep into the valves and blew some air through them and they opened up again. I probably didn't have to replace the purge valve, but it was relatively cheap, so I did. Put it all back together and voila, no more oil burning smell. Sure, my valve gaskets still probably leak a little, but it appears that the back pressure from these valves not functioning was the real culprit.

I am guessing that if you just replace the VC gasket and the cam adjuster seal and do not open these valves, you will just blow out the new seals at some point.
