Default heater core signs

I have a '99 a6 avant.

I'm getting a faint smell when I run the heat, and there's also a film that constantly coats the windshield. I'm assuming that it's heater core time and was looking for advice or a "how to". I've done this on a previous Audi [4000 quattro], so I know that I'm in for some fun times.

Default Extremely rare to have a heater core fail on a C5.

Are you sure you aren't having an evap problem?

Re-occuring oily fog on the windows is a sure sign of a heater core.

It's not an oily fog yet -- more like a smoky haze, but the smell is distinct

If it's a sweet smell... it's coolant.

Default AC evaporator problems are still rare, but more common than heater core issues.

The freon has oil in it, and it smells too.

Most VAG products use aluminum heater cores with plastic end tanks. They eventually leak between the tank and the core. But the C5 uses an all metal heater core that is very durable...so much so that I did not replace the heater core in my wife's 1999 A6 when I had the dash apart to do the failed evap at 225k miles.

Default That sounds kinda old skule.

True for the blue stuff, but doesn't the pink stuff smell different?

Default I have fresh pink stuff [from TB last week], but it still smells [faintly] like the green stuff...

when it's hot. It's hard to smell when it's mixed and cold.

My sense of smell is incredibly heightened since my chemotherapy as well, so I smell things that most people can't. My wife doesn't smell a thing (yet).

Check it out when you get a chance.

Either way, it looks like I'm removing the dash. Any "how tos" out there for this model?
