I would rather have the tried and true 4.2L engine of the new S4 than the very good but sometimes "blows up" S54 engine of the M3 and my M Roadster. The S4 looks killer too, in a Audi-subtle sort of way.
The new A8 L looks like perfection in a large luxo-sedan. MAN, I was impressed with the A8. I drove my son nuts at our local Car Show ogling over it.
If the new A6 is a hybrid between the two, I'm a goner! Quattro and the smooth lines of the S4 and A8 will make me lust for an (I can't believe I'm saying this) AUDI! All this while BMW has recently come out with the fugly 745 and Z4. I don't like BMW's chances for an attractive new 5.
PLEASE, let the new A6 look like the "spy pics" with the big shnoze grill like the pic above. If not, I'll think of my 5-series as "second or third best" (I like the E500 too).
I love my 540, at least for now.

To all interested I will be attending a formal display of the S60R/V70R in April at Shea stadium. I plan to drive the plates off the cars, since on paper they seem to be a couple of strong cars for a fair price.
The S4 also looks magnificient, however, the $50 thousand price seems a little excessive for me. Perhaps, a slightly used avant will be available in '04/05.

Though I'll agree with you on the hybrid of the upcoming A6. The Nouvalari is a great example of the front end. New A6 announced in 2004 as a 2005, with an S6 in 2006-7 should put me in the 180k mile range and ready for the newer model.

Since you brought it up.
"BMW's new styling seems geared towards a demographic that can't afford BMW's."
That's a paraphase, but the essence is there. And fits. Fugly is right.
