Default Help!! My 2001 C5 Avant is too slammed. In the name of cheap suspension mods, I took a set of

Intrax springs that came out of my former 2002 2.7t and had them installed in my Avant when I had the front control arms replaced. Shocks are the same for sedan & Avant, but not so for springs. The front dropped about 1", but the back dropped over 2" - presumably because the Avant weighs about 300 lbs. more than the sedan. The ride at slow speeds is fine, but hitting dips or bumps at expressway speeds produces the pogo stick effect. (Shocks are stock.)

For the same price I could swap out the springs for a set of Eibachs made for the Avant, or install Bilsteins or Konis in the back. I am leaning towards changing the springs, but does anyone think better damping control on the back would be the better option? Thanks.

Default Factor in the labor of multiple changes and you're better off with coilovers...

Better ride and performance + complete control over ride height.

Several years ago I was in the same position you are today. I tried multiple springs and shocks before doing what I should have done in the first place - install coilovers

Good luck

Default My advice is - whatever you get - get a matched set of springs and shocks *for that car*

Shocks and springs are not good nor bad. They are either matched to deal with fundamental resonances, or they are not.

Similarly, springs require knowledge of travel, inetrference, and weight.

Throw int he towel - the best cheap suspension is the one that came with it. After that, be prepared to spend $1000 or more plus appropriate labor ( yours or money).

Strictly speaking, the stock spring/shock combo is/are coil overs. The only diff not SRH adjustable.

Default Right on, Grant! There is but one optimum damping for a given spring/ unsprung mass system,,,

Change the spring rate or the wheel weight and you must change the shock's damping to keep it critical.

More like a range than a point ... but yes, there is (or should be) a relationship between the two.

Your range gets you off optimum, but may be good enough of government work, and you.
