I'm looking at a '97 A6 Quattro wagon with only 40,000kms. Single owner, very nice condition. I'm wondering why the original owner would trade it in for a Volvo (salesman's story).
I'd like to hear your advice on what to look for to avoid a lemon.

Everything they say is just geared towards getting you to buy a car.
That having been said, its a pretty good car. Muhammad just addressed the '97 A6 a couple days ago, try the search function.

Check the post from Muhammad on 1/25 in reply to 97 A6 Quattro. More info than the average person could expect to get. Great post. Thanks again. Still have not pulled the trigger on the car yet. Trying to sell my 560sl first. Anyone who wants to know about it let me know. Have pictures.

The 97 A6 wagon is pretty slow. Prior to the 30 valve engine and tiptronic (99+), a volvo wagon with AWD was a much faster car (even though it is swedish design)??? Recommend trying to find used 99. 30 valve and tip make all the difference!

Yes, all. I drove a 2.8 12 valve (95-98 engine) as a service loaner and realized how much slower it was. Also, the tip is a huge advantage in performance and enjoyment.
I would buy a 99+ and do what I have to to finance, etc..
The 97 is a nice car but painfully un-exciting to drive.
Just my opinion of course. I like alot of older Audis, it's just that the early A6 wagons aren't any fun to drive (except the S6 wagon of course).
