HELP: questions about my oil change...

Greetings all,
I recently changed my oil for the first time on my own and I have two questions.
1. For the oil filter, I know I should have gotten a MANN oil filter but none were in stock so I called up Checker Autoparts AND Autozone and they both said another oil filter that would fit my car is a K&N HP2004. I then called up PepBoys and they said the K&N HP2005 would fit my car. So I went to Checker (assuming Checker and Autozone were correct) and purchased the HP2004 and installed it on my car. Is this a problem??? It fit just fine.
2. After I drained all of the oil out, I proceeded to add about 6 quarts of oil without starting the car. At that time, the dipstick showed the new oil right about in the middle of where it should be on the dipstick. Then I started the car and then rechecked the oil. It wasn't even marked on the dipstick. Then I added another quart (totalling 7) and the oil was back to its correct position. Is this normal for oil to decrease when you start the car initially after adding oil? I am guessing yes.

1. I really like the Mann filters. Don't know about the K&Ns.
2. Yes, that's normal, especially if you didn't put any oil in the filter when you installed it. I'll usually pour oil in the filter to wet the media, and enough more so that it's 1/4-1/3 full, before installing the new filter. That way, you don't have as big a level change after start up, and depending on how the oil system in the car is designed, there's less time before oil is getting pumped to the engine after an oil change.
