Default Help reading check engine light codes 2000 A6 2.7T

Is this something that I can go to Autozone/Pep Boys and have them read or should I take to the dealer for analysis. Light came on 2 days ago, car continues to run fine.

Yeah autozone can tell you what code it is they won't turn it off though. And they can't tell you what the problem is. What I did was buy a OBDII USB cable from EBAY (place in washington) and I use the shareware version (401) of the VAG software just to read the codes and reset t he light. I use this list and te internet to find out what they mean. Works so far for me. But my 96 has only has O2 sensor issues and I haven't had any issues with the other two cars yet that the warranty didn't take care of so I might need more help in the future and have to purchase something. You can get the MS502 at habor frieght for $89.95 with a coupon and that will read real time data and most codes. its not a VW or AUDI unit that can read ABS , Air etc.. but for $90 it works for some things. The EU702 model for VW/AUdi is $189 bucks. you can buy these on EBAY. Or buy a vag.
