Here is Germany's Auto Motor und Sport article shedding light on the Next A6.

AMuS article is probably one of the best sources of information outside Audi Ingolstadt on the next A6. The Fotoshow contains 2 pics each of the evolution of this Audi model: Audi 100-A6, current C5-A6 and next C6-A6 expected. Article was printed in October, and in November AMuS mag there were articles on the next A6 including a cover pic.
If you want to learn more, someone needs to contact author Birgit Priemer and find out what he really knows that he has not written in his article.
I expect that Audi will release more information on the A6, and pics and introduction date after they have had a chance to examine the next BMW 5 series in auto shows and media tests. With the new E Class already out and the next Lexus GS not expected before late 2005, Audi just needs more information on the BMW to refine the next A6. Pischetsrieder probably has a good basic concept of the next 5 series from his final days at BMW, so it would be interesting what Audi has planned for the A6 to annihilate the BMW once and for all.
Here is the translation of the article (original article in links below)
""New edition of A6: A high-altitude flight design with AUDI
Sporty, agile and with a salient radiator grille in the style of the historical Auto Union racing car: The new AUDI A6 will be introduced starting from Summer 2004. The new A6 design is to shown to the public starting from 2003 in autocar shows as the time draws closer to introduction.
To the Fotoshow (you have to use link to original German article)
The customer will take gratefully to the knowledge, because after that much scolded stop of the last years, AUDI has set to design a high-altitude flight, to which conservative A6 pilots could refuse the Gefolgschaft. (What this means!)
Above all, the radiator grille appears unusually prominent, where many quotations from a famous and rich past appear here. The style comes from ex-Audi Design boss Peter Schreyer (now VOLKSWAGEN) who helped give new life to the front portion of the A6 with a modern interpretation of the Auto Union racing cars grill. If a person has problems with this new Audi style, he can no longer be helped by Audi.
A6 Avant comes only at the end of 2005
Since company head Pischetsrieder states that Audi is the sporty division of VAG, the A6 theme has passed on consistently to the other Audi models, including individual derivatives. Versions of the new A8 announced for 2003 like the W12 in long version and the A8 Coupé still in planning combine individual elements of the Auto Union grill in weakened form. The same applies to the four-door version of the A3, which comes in 2004 one year after the two-door on the market and clearly differs optically from this design.
New A6: High portion of aluminum in the body
The A6 will be introduced on the market in the summer of 2004. The first model will embody the new AUDI virtues in pure culture: sporty, agile, design-oriented and fully-equipped technically. The body does not fully consist of aluminum. However it has a high portion of this lightweight construction material. The chassis is refined in its fundamentals. The pneumatic cushioning from the A8 is offered for the higher-priced stronger engines. The external dimensions are almost unchanged, yet the interior space offered grows substantially -- exactly the same as the achievement potential of the engines.
10-cylinder with 500 HP in the RS6
The future RS6 will have approximately 500 HP with the new, strong 10-cylinder, which will also be used also used in the supersports car Audi GT planned for end 2004. The A6 will include 6 and 8 cylinder gasoline engines, which presumably begin with approximately 180 HP, as well as a Dreiliter-V6-TDI (approximately 220 HP).
Will there be an Audi A7?
There will still be distance between the A6 and A8, despite the higher positioning of the A6. There remains a place for a further model between the A6 and A8. It is still open whether this car will be a Coupé. What is firm only: Audi will offer in the future not only a luxury Offroader as well as a 10-cylinder aluminium supersports car, but also a sporty variant between the A6 and A8.

Photo #1: The four-door sedan of the new Audi A6 starting from summer 2004 . After a long back and forth, the light now shines clearly: The new A6 gets this unusual and prominent radiator grille. In addition, the A6 inherits some refinement of the "Avantissimo" study, which was introduced on the IAA show in Frankfurt for sensation. The Avant on the same basis follows approximately one and a half years later.
Photo #2: One can admire the A6 tail with the salient tail lamps that are similar in form with the current A8. Unfavorable technical accident: the folding door handles, from which one would simply not like itself to discharge with AUDI. A new edge on height of the door handles lends dynamics.

what info.
Designer Christian Schulte created the pictures of upcoming Audis on computer based on information from insider information, spy photos, design studies, brand-specific design philosophy, and partial support of the car manufacturers.
As Audi refined the designs, and more information "leaked out", Christian refined and reissues his pics - hence there are various versions of the "A6" pics floating around for example.
The pictures are published in various printed media under the names "Training Design", "Carvision," "Nextline" and "Automedia".
The link below is a little cranky, so you may have to click again if not working. But if you persist, you see a nice array of PS pics.<ul><li><a href="http://stern.de/sport-motor/auto/erlkoenige/34026.html">http://stern.de/sport-motor/auto/erlkoenige/34026.html</a</li></ul>

the C6 A6 will have the aluminum space frame and a 220 pound weight savings from the aluminum parts/frame. This would make the A6 Audi's third aluminum production model after the A2 and A8.

Don't like the bugatti grill all that much.

As has been pointed out, it's hard to imagine that the new front end shown in the first picture could comply with US bumper standards. Even if they only run a section of bumper across that continuous grill where the license plate is, it would improve the appearance, IMO.

ICO's post does seem very interesting and more up to date, so I hope he can post pics and at least give the exact source of his info. This next A6 saga will be ever evolving.
The 220 lb (100 kg) weight savings seems to be a "standard weight reduction" claim for aluminium... use of another material should not necessarily result in a perfect 100 kg savings. But definitely there is more aluminium in C6.
BTW, Pitschetrieder wants future VAG car platforms to be used for up to 12 years instead of the current 6 to 8 years, to achieve greater economies. So this C6 platform may be here for a while.<ul><li><a href="http://www.autoaluminum.org/autonews.htm">http://www.autoaluminum.org/autonews.htm</a</li></ul>
