Perhaps heat generated by friction of failing bearing melts the fins a bit?

Default Hah, yeah never said it was based on any fact or experience ;-)

I have no idea what those fins are made out of, but even under normal operating circumstances the turbo housing can get hot enough to glow red.

Is it that far of a stretch to imagine even higher temps cause the metal of the fins to soften a bit, then the force of the very high speed rotation causes them to distort?

(It's a real question, not a rhetorical one)

Default Of the posts I have seen of old turbos

usually there is fin damage so I just noticed mine looked new. What else can I check to see how well they held up?

Default Yea I think thats what does fail but I noticed they looked perfect and pictures I have seen showed

fin damage. I didn't know what else to look for.
