Did I use the term "full value" somewhere?
$2500 isn't even wholesale on a '99 A6. I know up front that mods mean nothing to a dealer, and the general public for that matter. Mods may help swing a potential buyer, but I know I'm not getting money back on it.
But $2500?? That's silly.

IMO the best thing to do is maintain the $hit out of your car and drive it 'til the wheels fall off.You can't replicate the driving experience for anything close to the cost of maintaining these cars. There is such demand for them my (one and only)local stealer scoffs at offers of msrp, which I have never paid for a new vehicle, much less msrp plus silly dealer markup.Nonetheless BD and Carbonlord nearly have me convinced I need a new 4.2.If it follows me home one of these days,my C5 stays put for visiting relatives,in laws etc.

why expect anything less than silly from a delaer?
look at the name they have DEALER.
It is sooo telling about their business.
Everything they do is LET'S MAKE A DEAL.
You want a higher trade in? OK pay more for the new car. You want the bottom line on the new car? Don't bring a trade to to table.

I had dealers for clients..
when I sold Advertising for a radio station. You would be shocked at what they do and how they do it. So what you are commenting on, I don't find unusual.
The point is, most (not all) are sleazy guys who can't make a living selling new cars for 500.00 over invoice. It has to come from somewhere else. Used cars deals and service.
Dealers sell cars.. they don't do well buying them. So don't expect anything other than low ball.

Wife's 99 has 215k on it now. Car is in very good shape, but the reality is that it is...
...worth more in parts than whole. Just took collision insurance off it last year when I realized that a shopping cart could do enough damage to total it.
