Default Hi, I'm new and looking to buy an A6

I am currently in search of an Audi A6 2.7T 2000-2001. I have many reservations on buying a car like this due to it's age and possible turbo problems. I can't really afford anything newer and I really like the Audi A6.

My other option is a 2002 Passat GLX for about the same price as the 2000 Audi.

I currently own a '99 Passat GLS V6. I am the 2nd owner and bought the car with 94k. I've had it for about 10,000 miles and haven't had any real problems outside of the battery dying on me 2 times before I replaced it. I have confidence in German vehicles as a general rule.

I'm sure most here are biased about Audi and that's ok.

Could anyone tell me why I should or should not buy a used Audi A6? Was 2000 a bad year for the turbo engine? What do you love about the A6 vs. other cars you have/had? Give me your .02 please.

Thanks

Default Test drive to make sure it doesn't vibrate. VW and Audi are one of the worst by

JD Power survey.

I think the car is fine overall, not happy with the "characteristic" vibration of it. See post above.

Default I just bought an Audi for the first time...this is what made me decide...

-For the Record-
First, let us set the record straight: I'm not an Audi(phile) nor am I Audi-biased. In fact, I was so determined to buy a BMW 5 Series that my friends were as shocked as I was that I didn't purchase a 5.

-My Requirements-
My requirements were: no more than 25K miles on it, at least 225 bhp, no older than a 2001 and mint condition interior and exterior. That being said, I gave up on the BMW 5 Series as it did not effectively meet my requirements. I didn't want to purchase a "dime-a-dozen" BMW 3 Series, nor did I want to purchase an entry-level 525i (are you kidding me?!). So I figured that I would wait and save up for a BMW 5 Series next year.

-By Chance-
On my way home from a long exhausting day at 3 BMW dealerships, I stopped by Audi. I test drove an A6 2.7T and was seriously impressed. Before that test drive, I never even thought about purchasing an Audi. Determined to read up and research Audis, I read everything I could that had to deal with the A6. And not just any A6, it had to be the A6 2.7 Turbo. After good reviews, good specs and countless days of deliberation, I truly believed this car would replace my decision to purchase a BMW 5 Series. Amazing? Believe it.

-The Purchase-
My next mission was to search for deals. I waited and waited for the right deal. Then I grabbed a 2001 Cashmere Gray (albeit an automatic), 28K miles, Quattro, leather, with no sunroof. The deal was WAY below what I was willing to pay for a 2001 530i with higher miles. Not only that but I also received interior/exterior detailing, new tint and a 6 year New Car Warranty (covers everything from the CD player to the Bi-Turbos). Selling price was still well under the 530i that had 20K more miles on it. I ordered the CarFax and it came in super clean. Amazingly, my extensive deliberation and research completely affected my decision to NOT purchase a BMW. Could this be? A BMW fan has decided to walk away from the blue and white propeller emblem? Absolutely. Quite simply, the BMW 5 Series (2001/2002) didn't seem like a good value as compared to the A6 2.7T for the requirements I listed regarding my purchasing decision.

-Current Ownership Experience-
The car is currently at Audi for warranty work: battery died, ABS light and ESP light came on and won't turn off, driver side power window control panel came apart from door handle, "horn/cricket" sound heard when accelerating hard. All in all, it is not a horror story (yet) and please make a wish for me that it will not turn into one.

-Just Drive It-
I will not be able to use the best Trademark ever created for a car "The Ultimate Driving Machine", save that for BMW. But I can tell you that driving this machine is just flat out awesome. The power in comparison to my previous 4 cylinder 120 bhp automobile is amazing and it is as solid as a rock. The A6 2.7T is understated but powerful. It tenaciously delivers 250 bhp to the tarmac via the sweetest all-wheel drive system engineered today. It is subtle and well mannered when it needs to be, or you can unleash fury and mash the pedal to the metal. Be careful, these Bi-Turbos will have you up to the speed limit before you can say "Ingolstadt". No sunroof? No problem. It doesn't even cross my mind that I don't have a sunroof. My A6 appears to be a great deal on paper, now I just have to wait for the warranty work to get completed to be fully happy. Hopefully nothing else will break down, but then again, that is why I have peace of mind with my New Car Warranty.

-Confused?-
I know this review might leave you confused as to whether or not to buy one. But what I can tell you this: The A6 is good looking, its lines will age well, it has excellent road manners, has gobs of power and was a better value than the BMW 5 Series that I was so determined to purchase. All-in-all, the warranty work I need to get done is a minor pain as compared to the joy this car brings when you drive it.

p.s. get a warranty as I can only speculate these cars are expensive to repair. Oh yeah, and I smoke a BMW 530i every time I see one.

Default Remember that you will hear complaints loudest and foremost here. The larger proportion of

satisfied owners are not as active as those who have problems.

Granted, listen to all the advice so that you are aware of any things to look for, but don't be shy of the brand - I've had two new Audi's over the last three years and they've been pretty much perfect. I fully expect that my next new car will be an Audi as well.

Default Just my $.02; but, I think you'll be better off sticking with

an 01. From all I've read they seem to have less problems. Seems to me there was someone trying to sell their 01.5 on this same forum; but, I just can't remember who. Oh well, that will teach him to come up with a better name. A name people will trust! ;-)

Default that makes me feel a little better...

what have you heard that is so good about an 01 as opposed to the 00, 02, and 03 model years?

Thanks.

Default I think he means vs the '00 which did have some teething problems.

The '02 introduced enough minor changes that it is a somewhat different car.

Default I'm with Spizzi on this...

I wanted a BMW 540i, but would have had to get a 1999 for what I paid for my 2002 2.7t two weeks ago. You can search the forum on this, but 2000 2.7t's have problems with the turbos and/or engine. You might get lucky and find one that has been fixed, but why not just go for a 2001? Should be mid to high $20's. The Audi looks better inside & out, performs as well (at least with a few mods), and costs way less - though part of that is because reliability (and dealer service?) is not as good as the Bimmer's.

I was looking for a 2001 until I found a good deal on a great 2002. Ming blue w/ tan interior, 6-speed, all option pkgs., APR ECU, full APR exhaust & bipipe, UUC short shift, Intrax springs (switching to Eibach), Koni shocks, 18" Fikse wheels. Yow, am I having fun.
