High RPMS while in Drive
I have never owned an Audi before, this is my first one. I have a 2000 Audi A6 AWD 2.7T when I start out in the morning in drive(D), when I get about 40mph the RPMS are high(5,000rpms) After it warms up it does not seem to do it as much, but still will from time to time. Does anyone know what causes this? Also, how many MPH's can I drive in the (4) gear? Thanks

Not sure if yours has Tiptronic or not but if you do, can you manually shift into 5th?
Mine doesn't shift from 2 to 3 until roughly 2,500 rpm but only when engine is cold (parked overnight) and I thought that was high...

Well, yes. But that's a vague question. Just because you *can* drive X mph does not mean you *should*. The worst time to run a motor, especially a turbo motor, at high rpms is when its cold. While cold the oil does nto flow easily, and high rpms may well leave lubricated bearings or wear paths. Its a;lso when metal parts are not at their design spec for proper mesh (metal parts expand as they heat up, and they only fit properly at designed operating temperature).
So, when cold i would avoid > 3k rpm.
I would suspect a sticking hydraulic valve. How many miles on the tranny? Was it ever serviced (fluid, filter)?

Start with a fluid and filter change unless you KNOW it's been done in the last 30K.
If it persists/doesn't get better get the car looked at with VAG-COM or transmission specialist (although dealer isn't a transmission specialist..they just look at codes, test drive the vehicle, and make their recommendations for a transmission replacement).
Starting cold shouldn't make much difference...5K is way too high.

STOP DRIVING IT !!!
Before you blow it up...
You have a five speed trans not a four speed, and at that rpm in "D" for drive at 40 mph you have something seriously wrong, how long have you had it and when did it start ?
65mph should be somewhere around 2800ish rpm in fifth gear.
I filled out the trans and final drive ratios along with tire size, your tires may differ, but this is just to inform you of the speeds at any given gear and rpm, it is not perfect but close. Click http://www.car-videos.net/tools/spee...B1=Recalculate

I have only had it about a week, and when I test drove it I did not have the problem. After it warms up, I can put it in Drive and no issues(most of the time)

I am not sure when the tranny service was done, only had the car for about a week. I will try to get the transmission service and see if that helps. Thanks
Something is wrong in the xmsn. Hydraulic servo or electronic solenoid not activating the new gear...it should shift at 1500-2000 at light throttle...obviously higher at more throttle (well, the gas pedal is really a torque request but I digress...).
