high voltage

For some time now I have seen my voltaqe meter read high (15.5 or so). That's just a guess because it's somewhere between 14 and 16. This is a 99 A6 Avant.
Today, the meter was pegged past 16. I had just pulled out of my drive and happened to glance at it. Wow, I'm thinking all those electonic things aren't going to like that much voltage so I shut it off. However, the needle stayed at the peg. Gas gauged didn't stay up, nor the temp. I didn't have anything turned on at all. No radio, not nothing. Started it back up and battery meter stayed at the peg. All other gauges working normally.
Confused, I bumped my hand on the dash. The needle settled back to 14.
Has this ever happened to anyone else?

10 Year old Voltmeter giving problems.. by getting stuck.. it is possible...
If you want to be rest assured.. just get your battery tested and see where it falls.. when was it last changed?? May be you can open up the IC and clean the needles if there is too much dust etc.
Otherwise Module Master can rebuild your IC at a price.. not sure at this point if that will be required..
