If it's a T6 the Volvo will outperform the 2.8 in a straight line but I suspect that may not be important to your wife. The light colored interiors on the S80 are pretty nice and the stereo is pretty comparable but the A6 still has the edge on interior design and quality.
I have driven the T6 and torque steer is very noticeable but I don't know how much it affects the 2.9. Backseat room is comparable and trunk room is decent in both the A6 and the S80 (compared to something like the 5 series). Quattro provides a safety edge to the Audi in slippery conditions.
Are you looking at a 2001 or earlier A6? The 2002's are 3.0 instead of 2.8 now.

Nice enough interior. Pretty big feeling, drove even bigger. LOTS of torque steer, at least in the T6. In summary felt like a Buick, although maybe a supercharged Park Avenue. I too have heard of lots of problems with the early ones.

The car is very quick in T6 guise. Major torque steer. Floaty ride. If you want the pseudo Euro but really a Town car in disguise kind of car, this is it.
We had a ton of almost new S80s traded in during the time I was at the dealership - this despite the Volvo dealer being across the street. Lots of folks who considered the Audi, bought the Volvo, and regretted it.
Trannies a very weak point. Buy used with great caution.

From a previous owner of an S80 I can tell you it's a pretty good car. Nice interior, great seats, acceptable stereo and controls.
One negative was the huge amount of torque steer from those front wheels and the main reason I'll never give up my Quattro now!

I've driven a 2.9 (the base version) and it was as powerfull as a... well let just say it is not at all powerfull with is small 2.9L and 197Hp... you know it is a big car. The ride was fine, comparing to a ford Crown Vic or a Lincoln. That is a great car only for the trunk space and the comftable rear seats that can well acomodate 3 peoples. Also I've heard that '99 MY is not good, you should go for a '00. My neibourg have brought one last year and he don't like it, it is now is 17y.o. daughter that use it and him, use the '02 Jetta 1.8T. He was used to a Bimmer before and say that it is nothing close to a german car. Floaty ride and not enough power.
