Not too sure mine was even there when I bought my 2001 but then I never noticed water in that area around the battery. I think solving the intrusion problem rather than looking for a way out for the water is time well spent. Probably don't want lots of regular watering there.

Sounds like good advice. I'll carefully check for any sealing issues.

The time I've noticed a problem is during very heavy rain while coming down from freezing temps in the mountains.

So if you had your battery out, would you just pull the plug out?

I guess if you have a water problem it would be okay to go ahead and pull that plug out. I don't see how stuff can get up through that hole except maybe mice.
