Default How long til my turbos go out?

I have a '01 A6 2.7T with 85K. Have flashed ECU to APR 93 octane, installed Samco TBB (bipipe wouldnt fit 2.7 with tip), APR R1 DV's, APR cat-back, and EVO V-flow CAI. Maintained by changing VC gaskets, cam seals, Serp and timing belt kit, fuel filter and plugs, PCV valve hose, boost hoses, Mann filter with ELF synth. Run 93 Octane regularly, drive modestly with traffic with extra boost now and then when an annoying Civic or similar wants to impress me with their exhaust pipe. So far no signs of decreased boost or power failure. My next plans are to compliment the 18" RS4 reps with a 1-2" drop. But my question is do I need to upgrade to KO4's and piggies before I kill these KO3's. I would rather wait until after I drop it to start saving for the 4's and pigs. Any input would help. Thanks

Default I predict

you have a while. If you are going to replace them regardless, just wait until the die or until you have the money. I bet you'll have the money before they die. That assumes you are saving for the eventual upgrade.

Default FWIW, whoever told you that a Bi-Pipe won't fit a Tip was smokin' something...

They fit Tips perfectly. I've had one on my 01 Tip for 3+ years. Many others here have them on their Tips. IMO, your tech is lazy or stupid.

Suspension and brakes are a good idea before adding more power

Default Fair enough, but lets not start name calling. If I upgrade to KO4's and pigs...

(once Ive completed the suspension and brakes) will I need to modify the fuel system? Im assuming I will need larger injectors and fuel pump? Right now I have the EVO CAI, so will I need to change to the RS4 MAF?

Default Sorry, just found it a funny statement. Re K04s...

Depends on the software you plan to use.
GIAC makes stg 3- software for set-ups w/o fueling. Its designed to work with the stock fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, injectors and airbox. I'm using this now and have been very pleased.
O.CT makes stg 3- software for set-ups w/o fueling. Its designed to work with an upgraded 5 bar fuel pressure regulator, and the stock fuel pump, injectors and airbox. I've used this in the past - its very good as well.
AWE / GIAC also make stg 3 software desinged to work with the upgraded injectors and MAF and stock fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and airbox. I've got all this stuff on order. Should be here and installed next month.

Finally, most of the software available now for K04s has been refined over the last several years. As such, its important to follow their specs regarding the components to use. As an example, AWE specifies that, among other things, the stock airbox be used. Changes from their specs will result in poor running conditions

Hope this helps

Mike

Default Why do people think the turbos are these fragile little things?

As long as you don't abuse them they will last and last. If however, you redline your engine while cold or shut off the engine just after long periods of major boost, you could damage the turbos as well as most of your engine. I would worry more about your Torque Converter with the APR 93 flash.

Default You only gave one piece of relevant info----

The ELF synthetic (assume 5W40 NF A3 compliant). That's good.

Your turbo life will be long as long as you change regularly, keep the revs and boost low when its cold (oil < 75 degC) and if you get it very hot, idle them down to avoid coking int he bearing or return line.

Do that, always, and you have 150-200k turbos in the nice T03s that minimize lag.

Merry Merry,

Grant
